2026 will be the first-ever 48-team tournament, which will take place across Canada, Mexico and the United States from Thursday, 11th June to Sunday, 19th July 2026.

How does the World Cup Tournament Work?

The World Cup is organized in two main stages: the Qualification phase and the Finals Tournament. For the 2026 edition, the tournament will expand to 48 teams, divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group, along with the best third-place finishers, advance to a Round of 32, followed by a single-elimination knockout phase that culminates in the Final.

The competition begins with qualifying matches to determine which national teams earn a place, and concludes with a month-long finals event featuring group round-robin play and then knockout matches, with extra time and penalties used to decide ties and ultimately crown the champion.
